In-ear headphones are sometimes referred to as earplugs. It refers to headphones that are small enough to fit in your ears. There are two main types of headphones: Earbud and Canalphone. Earbuds are worn in the opening of the ear, usually outside the ear canal. They can come in the form of "headbands" or "ear hooks" for added comfort, but because they don't penetrate the ear canal, they don't naturally create a sealed hearing environment.
Canalphones /IEM, by contrast, is partially inserted into the ear canal, creating a sealed listening environment. Many sites mislabel IEM as EarBUD because they are unaware of this difference.
